I just thought I'd comment on this Toshiba laptop...  I don't speak French, yet many keys have both English AND French.  Why is this?

Example:  PgDn - P.suiv.
          Del - Suppr.
          Alt - Car

Other keyboards are English only.  I didn't really realize it initially, but now I do, as the French text is a bright red, whereas the English text is a nice blue.  I wonder if I could scrape the French off...

Yes, but keyboards are usually one or the other...

Be careful of the language police.

I didn't want to go too high end, as this laptop is actually just a secondary 'transportable' computer for me.  Come to think of it, it's better than my home computer, which is only a few years old...

I've had my laptop for just over a year and it is still working well for me. It is always a pain to upgrade as you get attached to all the software you have installed etc, but then again it is good to start fresh too and get rid of the crap.

Exactly.  The biggest pain is having to go through everything all over again and set all the preferences up just right...
