A 12-year old boy in BC out camping was attacked by a cougar ( http://www.virtualvancouver.com/news/news-45.html ). Anyone ever been attacked by a cougar? I know when I go hiking I'm always afraid of some kind of wild animal attack such as cougar or coyote.

I live in Langley, for the most part, and I spotted a cougar in my backyard late one night once.  It's very rare that they would even be in that area, but every now and then I guess they travel.
They usually don't target adults, but small children, with their high pitched screams, could potentially attract a cougar.
Coyotes will leave you alone, btw!

If you go hiking out in remote areas always carry bear spray. It may be your best chance for survival should you run into large predators. Unless you can speak to wild animals like I can, you best be on your toes.

Bear spray is good.  That, or a 12 gauge shotgun, if you are allowed to pack one...

If I'm out in the bush, and a Grizzly decides he wants me for lunch, I'm afraid I'll have to put a slug in its ass!

I remember hearing just a few days ago how a woman riding her bike somewhere in the Rockies was eaten by a bear.
Although very rare, it does happen from time to time...

Big cat attacks here are more numerous in BC than most places. Vancouver Island had more big cats than anywhere because the deer were smaller than just about anywhere. A solo kayaker up near Bella Bella was also attacked this summer, he put the cat in a headlock, dragged it back to his kayak where there was a knife, then stabbed it repeatedly. Fortunately he had a VHF because he was is no shape to start paddling after that, his hand was chewed up pretty good.

A cougar attacked a man that was putting out his garbage in Florida a month ago. They found out later it had rabies.

sorry I was wrong that kayaker was attacked by a WOLF, now that happens a lot less than a puma grabbing your kid by the head and dragging them away

geez, must have been a pup? wrestling a wild animal like that and dragging it.... that would have been an ugly scary scene

I thought the same, but he was paddling solo down from alaska so he wasn't exactly a two finger typer like myself, but they always seem to attack when they are sick, weakened, hungry, but still, scary I agree

occassionally i get attacked by cougars.

they tend to be in their 40s, on the plump side, and ferocious.

forget about being able to wrestle them.

bear spray doesn't work on them either.

your best bet is to run for your life!

good thing i have strong legs.

ha ha, pimp juice.

REAL cougars are scary! Especially if you like to jog on remote areas with a lot of rock face. Take your dog with you. They'll go for the smaller animal first!

Maybe I'll signup for martial arts lessons in case I ever have to wrestle with a cougar. I had bear spray which I carried around whenever I went hiking, only the can is several years old and may not work any more. Maybe I should stare down the nozzle as I try to spray it to make sure it's still in working order. Smiley

The golden rule to hiking in bear or cougar country is to bring a freind who runs slower. Ideally that person should have some debilitating injury (like a chronic limp). That way he/she gets singled out and you are left alone.

In that case don't bring a friend, bring someone you really hate. Then you can knock 'em down as you're running away and give them a debilitating injury. Smiley
