I was watching a bit of the news earlier...

Any poor saps forced to ride it today?  Man, the delays looked brutal.

Which brings me to my second point...  I'm all for the environment and whatnot, but if what I saw today is any indication of what can be expected when a greater number of people decide to use transit, I think I'll stick to driving!

I hope that tomorrow's transit ride will be better. Transit always has problems when there's a snowfall.

Transit sucks at the best of times[Wink]

A day like today, where additional transit riders are out and about, just prove how antiquated our transit system actually is!

Vancovuer has never been able to bring its transit system up to par with the increase in population.  They haven't been able to add more buses to the most populous routes, instead spending all its time and money on the new Skytrain routes. Even with the new Skytrain routes it still does not answer the problems of bus routes, especially when the weather turns bad like it did today and those that would otherwise walk or ride their bikes all pile on the bus.

The Vancouver transit system may have been good in 1994 (or was it 1996?) when it won the "Best Transit System in North America" award. Since then it has stagnated, and in many case gone from good to worse which is why so many people like Ace claim they would rather drive than take the bus, environment be darned.

I don't know what city has the best transit system.  I haven't been to Europe for a long time, but I was in Toronto not too long ago and the transit system was fantastic, got from York University to the downtown U of T campus via bus then subway in not quite 20 minutes, and as soon as I got out of the subway station I had to wait only about 2 minutes before the bus to where I was going swung by (one was coming by every 5 minutes or so), and it took 10 minutes to get to the stop I needed to get to.  If I was taking a car from York to the final stop it would have taken me an hour, never mind the trying to find a place to park.

I also very much like the transit system in Chicago, can get from O'Hare Airport to Union station (downtown Chicago) via LRT in only 15 minutes.

Wow, I think NOT !  Do you realize that we have been using the original LRT in Scarborough since the 80's ?  It's the same cars that Van started with but guess what, no upgrades.  I used to ride everyday to work and boy am I glad that I drive now.  I always thought Vancouver transit is better, at least you kept the Trolley Busses, no ?

Translink has new buses? Where?  What's wrong with them?

STATS CANADA, the way I was travelling was great.  I guess one could compare my Toronto experience with going from UBC to maybe SFU-Burnaby.  I'd definitely take York U/U of T-St. George over UBC-SFU-Burnaby any day.  I suppose it is different when you go out to the suburbs just like in Van.

Yeah, I can understand about the subway cars, but hey it's a lot like that every where.  The LRT cars in Chicago are very old on some tracks, but they get you from A to B just as well as the new ones.

They're nice looking buses though.  It looks like there isn't much seating but more space for standing passengers.

I wonder if they're going to update their skytrains.  I hope not...that would be a waste of $ imo.

They score a big double double with me when it comes to public transit for work.. It costs almost exactly twice as much for busfare as it does for gas, and it takes almost exactly twice as long to take the bus as it does to drive. When the entire staff of translink is using public transit to get to work every day, then I will know that they have done a good job. Until that day, I will know that they just don't get it.

has anyone been on those new b-line with the talking voice to announce your next stop?

those new buses seems to break down more often than the older ones.

I think that happens more often than people think...  Rarely does that even make the news, for whatever reason...
