Toasters have various settings depending on the type of bread you'll be toasting. Higher settings are used for darker breads, like rye.
Most modern toasters have some sort of a sensor built into them. So when you stick in a slice of bread, the duration of heat exposure is determined by the what the sensor indicates to the rest of the machine.
Stick in a slice of dark rye bread and adjust it to 2 or 3, it'll barely be toasted before the shut off mechanism kicks in. That's why settings like 4 or 5 are needed.
However, leave the setting at 4 and stick in a slice of white bread - it'll come close to burning, depending on how much moisture the bread has.
