econ101...law of diminishing returns.  At some point in the population charts, products become cheaper per unit to produce and the US is 10x our size population wise.  Cheap Mexican labor doesn't seem to hurt either...

A greater population signifies greater production making the larger country seemingly more self-sufficient and lowers the need for imported goods.

Also, greater product choice will affect competitiveness and keep user costs down.
