I can't believe how badly we are getting ripped off on prices in Canada compared to the U.S. ... the differences make for a major difference in standard of living when you add it up

just a few examples of what I remember recently...

haagen dasz ice cream pints... u.s. $3 canada $6
organic milk 2 litres... u.s. $3.50 canada $5
gas... u.s. $3 gal canada $4 gal
books and magazines are obvious right on the label
emergen-c vitamin packet box... u.s. $11 canada $20

etc. etc.... it is sad to see how much we are getting gouged up here

I was thinking of applying for one of those Nexus cards and making a weekly habit of crossing the border to get gas and groceries and stuff.

You gas bill would exceed your savings! You are lucky you don't live down here, even more expensive when you live at the end of the supply chain.

hi Sarah Smiley

actually, I think I would save enough on a pint or two of ice cream to pay for the gas for the trip Tongue

it's lame that 20 miles away just because it is a border that so many things are around half the price

My theory is quite simple.  Educate yourself and rise above minimum wage jobs, earn a decent income and enjoy the benefits our high priced goods provide us in tax revenue.  That being said, f*** the GST.

The problem is not in what you know it's in how living expenses go up and the majority of people earn minimum wage and they bitch about it not being enough to live on... so minimum wage goes up and it ripples through to everything... from rent to food to entertainment... When companies have to pay more for their employees they have to charge more for their products to balance out the increased CPP, EI and wage expenses.

I guess I am the only one on here that does not cross over to shop[:0] I am not close to the border,so I don't bother!
what do they charge for taxes? We have pst and gst  what do they have?     I personally hate shopping so,the less time I have to do it the better[Smiley] However my teenage daughter on the other hand loves it[Sad] so we might just go down for a weekend get away and let her go nuts, just to shut her up about it! any suggestions on a good mall or place to go for buying clothes? Are the clothes much different in prices?

Prices are going to be somewhat higher in Canada because of our smaller population base and transportation costs, not to mention higher rates of taxation.

That said, the amount we are charged on many goods exceeds these considerations.

How about $10-$15,000 difference on a new car?

A pair of Nike's that run you $60 in the US will cost you $180 in Canada.

Clothing, big-ticket electronics, and automobiles are areas we're getting gouged.

And, of course, in real estate.

I think the reason food is so cheap in the USA is they have all those huge production facilities, distribution centres, plus they don't have to worry about bilingual labels and food restrictions.  In Canada we have to have bilingual labels, plus our food restrictions are different than the USA so it is more complex to produce the same kind of foods in Canada as the USA.  Also, the reason for the USA having all sorts of food we do not have is simply because we don't have the populaton base (300,000,000 compared to 35,000,000) nor the production facilities.  I mean even a small city like Minot, North Dakota has way more food choices than Regina or Saskatoon, both with 200,000 more people than Minot.  Oh yeah, don't forget the 24-hour shopping.

The reason their prices seem lower is a more competitive market place combined with lower transportation costs.
