The Vancouver Park Board is looking into purchasing 30 life-size animatronic dinosaurs to be placed in Stanley Park with hopes of attracting 400,000 paying customers a year.

Parks are supposed to be places for everyone. I hate the parcelling up of community land into pay-only zones.

Not to mention dinosaurs have nothing to do with Stanley Park and will only serve to degrade its integrity by turning it into some 3rd-rate amusement park.

now that would be GAY if they did that.  Unless they are friggen amazing recreations, perhaps set in a museum like environment.  I had seen a similar display down in Portland Oregon at OMSI, and was quite impressive, but that's inside a museum setting far away from any prized posession like stanley park.

I have to admit since they started charging for parking at stanley park I rarely ever go anymore. When we have out of town guest in stead of showing off this park ,we just go somewhere else that is just as nice and that lets you park for free.I can still remember when stanley Park use to have a free zoo! that was many years ago, but they had monkeys , a polar bear, penguins, snakes and otters all for the public to visit for free. Then they took it all out,got rid of the whales in the aquarium and started charging people to park!

every decent place in canada with a view that was once public is now charging.  its shameful.  When I was in Toronto a couple months ago, I couldn't believe I was charged $12 for parking for 30 minutes at Niagara Falls.

You can thank that heartless bastard Gordon Campbell for the money grab at Stanley Park ... when he was mayor of Vancouver he slashed the parks board budget to nothing and told them they had to raise their own budget. The result? Pay parking in Stanley Park which was such a huge financial success, Gordo then borrowed the idea and instituted parking meters all across town from 8-until-8 instead of the 9-6 it used to be, also installed a few hundred more parking meters in the down town core ...

"... 25 to 30 life-size animatronic dinosaurs to be installed in Stanley Park near a miniature railroad right next to the petting zoo."

What the heck? Who wants to see 25 to 30 of these things in that pretty park?  I can only imagine the security issues as having such things in the park is just asking for vandalism. More money is being spent, and for what?  Idiots on the park board. Look how successful their pay parking scam was.

If I wanna see dinosaurs I'll go to the mall in Richmond and see ones there for free.  Anyhoo, the rabid racoons and homeless people setting fires are more fun to look at, not to mention free![^]

More bullsh- from the idiots running this place.  Everybody in this city is a bunch of pussies though and won't even do anything when the hotels start being built in the park.

There have always been people who look at stanley park and shake their heads and say "all that undeveloped land, what a waste." If they were allowed to, stanley park would be clearcut and filled with extremely expensive condos and townhouses. Asian developers in particular think that publicly owned assets are part of a communist agenda and it is incomprehensible to them that we won't allow stanley park to be developed. Public assets have no place in the right-wing agenda that rules this province (and country) and charging us to use a publicly owned asset like stanley park is just the tip of the iceberg.

In the 60s there was a proposal to build a big resort and hotel in Stanley Park that was supported by the mayor.  People are too bloody satisfied doing nothing and don't realise it's going to happen some day.

This is a crazy idea, I thought they were trying to make Stanley Park more natural by getting rid of the old zoo.  Now they are going backwards!

The proposed resort in the 60s was NOT to have been in Stanely Park but on the edge of the park on on north side of Georgia Street just before you enter the park. Squatters and protesters sucessfully stopped the proposed idea. I believe it was to be the Four Seasons Hotel.

I was born and grew up in Vancouver and used to go to Stanley Park a lot, like two or three times a month, even more when I lived in the West End. Now, due to pay parking and congestion I haven't been to Stanley Park in about 15 years. I don't care any more what they do with it, they can pave it and make it like Yaletown and I couldn't give a sh-, its already been ruined for me.

The squatters camp was in the 1970s.  I knew some of the guys who lived there, but the plan goes back into the 1960s.

At any rate it was proposed to be right at the entrance to the park whether or not it was technically in it.  Tom Campbell was behind it and the destruction of Chinatown and a lot of Gastown and even the Carnegie Centre for what he called his "revitalization" of Vancouver which was basically nice words for being totally pro developers.

Don't kid yourself about what that hotel would have done.  If it was in the park or not the park would have been essentially the resort grounds and would have lead to a lot more development in the park.

Chinatown residents successfully derailed the 'Chinatown Freeway' idea, Tom Campbell was also responsible for the Gastown Riots, and also for building the Granville Street Strip which was a complete failure. He is also infamous for his personal vendetta against Dan MacLeod and the Georgia Straight newspaper.

Campbell was tough on hippies and other no good types which I always liked and I also liked most of his stance on development because it gave lots of guys jobs.  Chinatown and Gastown are historical I guess but the freeway would have been a good thing.  The only bad thing was the god awful building they had planned to be built in the place of the old ones.  The white building at the north east corner of Cambie and Cordova is what Gastown was supposed to look like.

Those are pretty bias statemnts you make, Campbell employed the Van Police Force to mercifully bully youth, if that's what you mean by 'hippies and other no good types'. Local developers of the time had Campbell in their hip pocket, and he was pretty much run out of office by the voting public.

Vancouver was overrun by long hairs and bums who squatted all over Kits and did nothing but smoke drugs and commit other crimes.  It was a disgrace these young guys looking like queers and with long hair and all drug ruined and addicted.  I used to beat the sh- out of these lowlifes myself and I was always happy to see the cops keeping an eye on these bums and communists.  A bunch of useless scumbags who only wanted to corrupt good kids.

Those longhairs were the worst thing to ever happen to our country.

I'm tolerant of anybody who is right in the head.  I don't tolerate freaks and subversives and other undesirable types.  Putting up with scum just because they want to be scum is totally wrong.  I didn't fight for this country so it could be turned into an asylum for perverts and other sickos who want to destroy everything we stand for.
