Richards brings a good point- should citizens be forced to vote. I am inclined to think they should- given that it impacts directly on one's life. But more important is an understanding of what politics is.

Politics is about who gets what.

Anyone else?

Students should have to pass several rigourous courses in Canadian politics before being able to graduate high school. Furthermore one should have to demonstrate an understanding of the nations politics to be able to get a drivers liscence. This would force Canadians to get a clue about something other than Brad and Angelina, and it would make it harder for our government to keep selling us out. But then if it would stop that, I can see why our government would not wish to enforce such education.

That doesnt hold Tuesday. Saddam may have forced a vote- for one party. Democracies offer up some choices.

Students do get that at some point, Richards, but I agree, not nearly vigorous enough to impart a real understanding of the scope of politics. I diid a minor in polosci and taught Canadian politics in social studies (grade eleven level, I believe).

He also ensured that each ballot had the voters name and address on it. Would you have voted against him?

I am happy that we have the chance to vote or not. As for voting the right candidate, well, who isn't corrupted politician these days?

Thank you, Richards. I knew there was a serious flaw in Sadam's "elections".

Power corrupts. Any politician will stick his hand in the cookie jar eventually. I do not mind so long as he is listenning to Canadians making good decisions on their behalf. It is when they stop listenning that I lose my patience.

You can't regulate freedom. Try as you may.

Surely- the one thing that can be regulated in human affairs IS freedom. History tells us that.

Restricting freedom. ie: compelling, would be tantamount to dictating. No I would not support that concept. Under any circumstance.

Fair enough, surely- you are a lover of freedom, uncompromised.

Politics is who gets what.

The who is a population with left to right thinking
The what are scarce resources and how they become distributed.

You have the freedom to ignore all that.

Despite our ambitions we find that yet we are but human. In other words our aspirations outway our reality. So to think we can control our desires through restriction is nonsensical. Hope I'm not getting too yorkcounty here.

Yep you lost me- now can you put that in plain English in the context of the post you inserted it into. I mean, I truly and surely want to try and understand what you are saying.
