Searching for a used vehicle, I've phoned dealers and private sales. Wish I could buy new this is turning out to be a lot of work.

Anyways found one at a dealer, he faxed over a history report, seems its never been in an accident known to ICBC at least. I'm hesitating because the vehicle originated in Ontario. Is this silly of me? I haven't seen or driven it yet.

I'm also looking into a private sale but its out in Abbotsford and he is asking too much. That would be 2 hours of my time and he may not come down in price. His ad has been advertised for a month now.

Hate used car shopping.  Angry

They use a lot of salt on the roads in the winter time in Ontario so I would be worried about it rusting out in a short time.

Thats what I was thinking. Its too well priced for a dealership which gives me a red flag feeling.

are you wanting to pay upfront or finance?

a new car is sometimes a better deal than a used car if you are financing, as they offer you better interest rates on a new, and with discounts you can get a pretty rock bottom price, at this time of year if you go for a 2010 you can probably get a ridiculously low price

it is a buyers market, don't jump in too fast on a deal, with some time spent you can get a better deal, especially if you are looking at a few different dealerships at the same time.... remember that the salespeople are good at what they do so you might get hooked in to the first place you go to, it is possible they have the best deal though

with financing too, you can get a longer term than with a used vehicle, so the monthly payments often can be lower buying new than buying a 3 year old used car

I noticed that Honda is having a 2010 clearance sale with rebates now, I would pick a vehicle style in my price range and then go to three different dealers and ask them for a quote based on a 7 year term, in three years  you would be half way paid for and your vehicle would only then be as old as the used ones you are looking at, only the difference is you would have complete control of maintenance and condition of the vehicle, not to mention some of the really good warranty that is being offered

they can give you a quote based on what your "every two weeks" payment would be and over how many months, make sure you tell them that you want a final number with everything added in, no surprises like "etching" or "Pdi" or "taxes" or "freight" or anything at the last minute, tell them you want the exact $ number that will be taken out of your bank every two weeks, that way you are at a fair comparison and no surprises... this is very important because most dealers get you in the final stages of the deal and then bring up "nitrogen tire fee" or "wheel locks" or other little things, just tell them that you want a final payment that they will hold to, then tell them you are going to go home to think about it for a night

nowadays you can get a pretty nice new car on a 7 year term for somewhere between $130 and $200 every two weeks, depending on the model and how many fancy options

just as a really rough guideline, that you would need to check into, what I have seen is that if a vehicle is going for in the low $20000's new you end up paying around $160 every two weeks, a vehicle that is around $40,000 will end up with payments of $275 every two weeks

my above numbers are based on a good interest rate, that is another thing that varies depending on manufacturer, some companies have better deals with the banks and offer a lower interest rate, which can make a big difference, if you aren't completely set on Honda, you could add in another manufacturer to your comparison just in case they are offering better deals

I'm kind of partial to Dodge or Ford because I like the idea of supporting Canadian as much as possible, and their prices are really good right now for what you get, but that is something you need to look into and decide yourself on what you want

the thing with financing a used vehicle is you are always paying top interest rate because the risk is higher to the lenders on used vehicles, so depending on the incentives and interest rates being offered on new, it sometimes makes the payments very close between new or used

If you buy from a dealer, there should be some sort of warranty... Even a 90 day one???

If you buy from "John Q Public", there is NO warranty or recourse if anything goes terribly wrong...

CTV has done lots of investigative reporting about used car sales, might be worth your time to check their website for some of those stories???

Is there a particular dealership that maybe some of your friends or neighbours can recommend???
