Chipmunks, gophers, elks and skunks did it for me when I visited Canada.

I never seen bears, or cougars, or chipmunks. First and only time I saw a skunk was earlier this year when I had to catch a bus at 4:20am. My sister saw a skunk last night when she was coming home. I saw a polar bear and penguins at Stanley Park when I was very little. Few days later the polar bear died. It wasn't moving when I was there.

That's no way to treat a polar bear. Where I live seeing polar bears is a common everyday occurance and I don't have to go to a prison, err, zoo to see 'em.

Do you live near Churchill, MB or some equally remote place?

I think that if zoos get their animals by taking in animals that have been injured or are unable to survive in the wild, they serve a useful purpose.

I love going to zoos and not being much of a traveller, it's the only way I'd ever see most of the animals that are there.  Most zoos are very conservation-oriented now as well and do a great job teaching the public about disappearing habitat, the effect of environmental change on animals, etc.
